Legal Requests to Remove Images From Google

Xavier Prather

Many public figures have had their electronic devices hacked or their explicit content stolen and leaked on websites hosting illicit content. These materials can typically be seen in a basic Google Image search inquiry. Even though Google has some readily available tools to attempt to have the content removed, did you know you can take things one step further and make a legal request to have the content removed from Google Search results?

Google's Legal Help Center

Although Google has several tools to remove outdated or explicit content from Google Search results, some content may not qualify for removal under Google's personal content policies. Fear not, Google's Legal Help Center provides a remedy for content to be removed for specific legal reasons, including (but not limited to):

  • Copyright infringement

  • Trademark violations

  • Court order

Through Google's Legal Help Center, if you see content on any Google product that violates your rights or the law, you can send a request to have the content blocked, limited or have access to the content completely removed from Google products. You can submit an effective request by completing the following steps:

  1. Select the Google product where the content you are reporting appears.

  2. Provide the reason you wish to report the content.

  3. Include specific URL(s) of the content you want to report.

  4. Include a specific description about what content on the page is violative and why you are reporting it.

Once the request is filed, you or your authorized representative will receive an email confirmation and a reference number. Google may contact you with questions or requests for clarification of information provided in the request. If the content you're reporting appears in multiple Google products, you must send an individual request for each product.

You may be liable for damages (including costs and attorneys' fees) if you improperly or falsely claim that content infringes on your rights. For these reasons, it is highly recommended you contact a legal professional to ensure you have the authority to make such a request and such request is made in full accordance with procedural requirements.
